Wildlife
Gujarat is a unique state has many kinds of habitats. Gujarat's variety of habitats makes it an ideal destination for those interested in wildlife viewing and bird watching. These varied landforms include dry deciduous forests, majestic grasslands, wetlands, marine ecosystems and rich moist deciduous forests. The Asiatic Lion is found only in Gir. The wild ass in the Ran of Ketch, the rare great Indian Bustard in the bird reserves, the world's only four-horned Antelope and the Blackbuck are some other valued protected in Gujarat.

Gir Wildlife Sanctuary :

Sprawling over an area of 1424 sq km, Gir with its dry deciduous forest is home to 30 species of mammals, 20 species of reptiles, and several species of insects and birds. It forest is the only place in the world, outside Africa, where the lion can be seen in its natural habitat. Gir, the last refuge of the Asiatic Lion, is one of the largest and most important wildlife sanctuaries in India. Other animal residents of the park are sambar deer, chital, nilgai the four-horned antelope chowsingha, chinkara, wild boar, langur, jackal and hyena. Few people know that Gir is also one of the finest bird sanctuaries in India. Some of the typical birds of Gir are the crested serpent eagle, crested hawk eagle, brown fish owl, king vulture, jungle quail, paradise flycatcher, pygmy woodpecker, hard headed oriole etc.

Little Rann of Kutch :

The wild ass is to be found only in Gujarat. The Sanctuary is spread over 4,953 sq km over five districts of Surendranagar, Banaskantha, Patan, Kutch and Rajkot. The two main entry points to the sanctuary are at Bajan and Jinjhwada. The Rann is flat, white cracked and utterly barren kand. There are 364 hills, called bets that rise across the Rann. The bets provide food and shelter to the animals. All travel hast to be done in Jeeps and trucks. Other species that could be seen during wildlife viewing drives in the Sanctuary are the Nilgai or blue bull antelope, blackbuck or Indian Antelope, chinkara or Indian Gazelle, birds and reptiles are also found here. One can view the panther, bull, wild boar, wolf, etc.

Velavadar National Park :

Blackbuck National park Velavadar, in the Bhal region of Saurashtra is a unique grassland ecosystem that has attracted fame for the successful conservation of the blackbuck. Once found in open plains throughout the country its largest population at present occurs in Velvadar National Park. This Exclusively Indian animal is perhaps the most graceful and beautiful of its kind. It has ringed horns that have a spiral twist of three to fours turns and are up to 70cm long.. Located 72 km away from Bhavnagar and spread over an area of 3,408 ha, the park has been classified as biotic province of semi-arid bio-geographical zone. Velavadar is also one of the few national parks in India where the Indian Wolf is proliferating successfully. Nilgai, Jungle cat and Indian fox are often seen while touring the park. Velavadar is also known for its birdlife including vulnerable species like the Stoliczka's Bushchat and Saras Crane. It hosts one of the world's largest harrier roosts in winter

Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary :

Nal Sarovar is one of the largest water bird sanctuaries in the country. Nal supports a large number of birds of great importance as tit lies on the flyway. The Sanctuary covers 121 sq.mt, with a checklist of about 250 birds seen over the years. The water depth does not exceed 1.8mts making it one of the largest shallow lakes in the country. Migratory birds start arriving in October and the population peaks in January. The birds start leaving when the lake dries up in March-April. The duck and geese population reaches over 2500 and 46000 respectively in winter. The waders' population reaches its peak when the water level falls towards the end of January, pelicans, ducks, geese, rail, coots and egrets, are some of the birds that are to be found in the sanctuary. There are chances of seeing raptors too like the Marsh harrier, Greater spotted Eagle, Osprey and the threatened Pallas Fish Eagle.

Grasslands of Kutch :

The grasslands and lakes of Kutch fall on the migratory route for many species of birds with lakes like Charri in the Banni grasslands being especially important bird areas. The Lala Bustard Sanctuary near Naliya is one of the top sites for the Great Indian Bustard round the year, the Macqueen's Bustard in winter and the Lesser Florican which breeds here during the rains. It is a good sanctuary to watch larks, warblers, wheatears and sandgrouse. There are good chances of seeing Black Francolin in the sanctuary. This sanctuary and the Banni region are the habitat of vulnerable species like the Stoliczka's Bushchat and White-naped Tit. The Grey Hypocolius is often seen in the district. The Banni grasslands are also highly rated by those interested in raptors as a breeding ground of Tawny and other eagles, and for large concentrations of roosting eagles in winter.
