Museum of Gujarat

A Window to the history of Gujarat.

The land of Gujarat has witnessed a continuous human civilization from prehistory to the present day. Its vast  cultural wealth, art, archaeological, etnological objects and natural history specimens are preserved in various museums of Gujarat State. These cultural treasures in various Government Museums of Gujarat State provide nonformal education to students and visitors. It also provides a detail scenario of the culture history and acts as a perennial source to delight the mental stimulation to fulfill the curiosity of the human mind. There are fourteen Government Museums in Gujarat state located at various important historical cities, tribal areas and tourist places.
People all over the world have taken pains to preserve the reminiscences of the bygone era by constructing museums . Gujarat too has its Golden past preserved in such museums. These museums scattered throughout the state, showcase carious facets of the rich heritage of  Gujarat, A few noteworthy are mentioned here.

Calico Textile Museum-Ahmedabad

Established I 1949, it is regarded as one of the finest textile museums in the world. The museums in the world. The museums displays a magnificent collection of the finest fabrics spun, woven printed and painted in different parts of India, dating back ti the 17th century. It also houses a collection of marble, sandstone and bronze icons, busts and excellent refernce library on textiles.
Timings: 10:00 am to 12:30pm and 2:30pm to 5:30 pm except on Wednesday and government holidays.

Sabarmati Ashram-Ahmedabad

Founded as Satyagraha Harijan Ashram by the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi in 1917, 'Hridaya Kunj', the simple cottage where he lived, now preserved as a small-and-Light show offer in-depth insight into the life and work of the Mahatma.
Timings: During summers 8.30 am to 12.00 pm & 2.30 pm to 7.00 pm. During winters 8.30 am to 12.00 pm & 2.00 to 6.30 pm, on all days.

Vishala Vichar Museum-Ahmedabad

Vishala a restaurant that serves traditional Gujarati food amidst village settings, has a museum by the name of Vichar Utensil Museum' that houses a unique collection of earthenware and metal utensils of the bygone era various parts of India.
Timings : 10:30 am to 5.30 pm on all days

Shreyas Museumof Flok Art-Ahmedabad

With a vide collection of folk art forms the varied cultures of Gujarat, this museum displays various craft forms and costumes from various areas.
Timings : 11:00 am to 3.)) pm and 7.00 pm to 11.00 pm.

Sardar Patel Museum-Ahmedabad

Housed in the old Rajbhavan, a palace of the yesteryears, the museum exhibits the life and works of Sardar Patel. It is situated at Shahibaug.
Timinigs 10:00 am to 5.30 pm except on Mondays.

Kite Museum-Ahmedabad

The museum houses a wonderful variety of kites that depict their colourfulhistory and regional flavours It is a visual delight.

Institute of Indology-Ahmedabad

Dedicated to the study of Indian culture, the Institute also houses some of the best collections on Jainism, illustrated manuscripts and miniatures.
Timings : 11.00 am to 5.30 pm except on Monday

Tribal Museum-Ahmedabad

Located on Ashram Road, Ahmedabad in Gujarat Vidhyapeeth, it provides insight into the lifestyles and faith of the various ethic groups of the state. The objects on display cover religious ornaments, musical instruments, dress, agricultural implements, toys, photo slides, films depicting different facets of tribal cultural of Gujarat.
Timings: 10:30 am to 5.30 pm except on Saturdays, Sunday & government holidays.

Kankaria Lake-Ahmedabad

A circular lake constructed by Sultan Qutub-ud-din in 1451. it has an island garden at the centre with a summer palace, known as Nagina wadi. The lake is a popular recreation cnetre 'Bal Vatika' and aquwarium , a boat club, a natural history museum and a zoo surround it. Timings: Balvatika: 9.00 am to 10:30 pm Zoo 8.00 am to 6.00 pm except on Fridays.

Hussein-Doshi ni Gufa-Ahmedabad

A fallery housing the combined efforts of artist M.F. Hussein and architect B.V. Doshi where art and architecture complement each other and fuse to become a unique experience. Located on the campus of the Centre for Environment Planning and Technology, the Gufa as its is popularly called, is a configuration of cave-like structures buried under the ground. Timings: 4.00 pm. To 7.30pm except on Monday

Vadodara Museum and Picture Gallery-Vadodara

The Museum and Picture Gallery, Baroda is the largest Museum of the Gujarat state. The It was built by late Maharaja Sir Sayajirao II Gaekwad in the year 1887 A.D.The museum houses an impressive collection of art, archaeology, natural history, geology and ethnology. The adjoining art gallery has a great collection of old European masters-Veronese, Glordano, Zubaran, some Flemish and Dutch school paintings, tuner and Constable, Mughal miniatures and valuable palm leaf manuscripts of Buddhist and Jain origins. Entrance fees Rs.200/- for foreign Nationals & Rs.10/- Indian national
Timings: 10;00 am to 5.00 pm except on Thursday and government holidays.

Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum-Vadodara

This is the royal collection of art treasures of old masters like Raphael, Titian and Murillo as well as modern Western and Indian paintings. Greco-Roman exhibits, Chinese and Japanese art and a large collection of contemporary Indian art.
Timings: (April to June) 9:00 am to 12:00 pm & 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm (July to March): 9:00 am to 12:00 pm & 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm except on Mondays and government holidays.

Kutch Museum-Bhuj

Established in 1877 as the Fergusson Museum, it is the oldest museum of Gujarat. The exhibits on display are gold and silver ornaments, Kshatrapa inscriptions, are gold and silver ornaments, Kshatrapa inscriptions, textiles, weapons, archaeological finds, stuffed animals and musical instruments. It is equipped with a picture gallery and sections for anthropology and shipping.
Timing 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm except on Wednesday.

The Barton Museum -Bhavanagar

The museum exhibits rich collection of coing, farming implements and arms, kathiawadi handicrafts, archeological and geological finds.
Timings: 8:30 am to 6:00 pm.

Lakhota Fort Museum and Kotha Bation-Jamangar

Lakhota is a historical fort located in the erstwhile princely state of Jamnagar Presently converted into a museum, its terraces display a fine collection of sculptures that span the period from the 9th to 18th century.
Timings:10:00 am to 1.00pm. & 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm except on Wednesdays, 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month & government holidays.

The Junagadh Museum-Junagadh(Royal Connection)

The Junagadh Museum has a precious collection of prehistoric stone and bone implements, sculptures, copper inscriptions and handicrafts.
Timings: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm & 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm except on Wednesdays, 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month.

The Watson Museum-Rajkot

This ethnic museum has a fabulous collection from the princely states of Saurahstra, beautiful portraits of royals and European guests, artifacts from the archeological finds, medieval manuscripts and miniatures etc.
Timings: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum (Wincheste Museum)-Surat

Established in 1898 and originally named as Winchestar museum, It displays over 10,000 exhibits of arts and crafts, priceless photographs, oil paintings scenes depicting the life of Sardar Patel.
Timing Between 10:00 am to 6:10 pm except on Monday
