  Vadnagar nu Torann
Ancient Historic Architecture of Gujarat Vadnagar nu Toran

Excavations indicate that Vadnagar was an ancient town of considerable influence. The Most famous monument in the town is the Toran , a pair of 12th century columns supporting an arch, with delectable carvings. It  is a semi-religious or civic form that flourished  under the Solanki rule in Gujarat. Two of the finest examples are at Vadnagar. Of The two, the one that stood at what was the edifice of  Rewah, is a truly imposing structure. Almost complete and typical example of its kind. It rises to a total height of 40 feet. All the parts forming the Toran are devised on the same principles as those employed in the temple design. The Sharmishtra Talao is an interesting example of the water retaining systems of the Solanki period as it is still in use.

The “Stepwell” at the village of Adalaj, situated 18kms  form Ahmedabad , is a fine example of magnificent water architecture. It gets its name from Ruda, wife of the Waghela chief  Virsinh, who built it between 15th & 16th century C.E. The Adalaj Vav is richly carved every pillar and wall surface covered with leave and flowers, birds and fishes and friezes of ornamental designs. It is unique in that it has three entrance stairs leading to the stepped corridors. These stairs meet in the first story underground in a huge square platform which rests on 16 pillars. The five storied Octagonal shaft-wonderful sculptures of a king seated on a stool beneath a parasol with two bearers, gods goddesses, dancing maidens, musicians, birds , animals, leaves one spellbound. Form the steps of the well one can literary feel the presence of the royal ladies peeping outside the intricately carved Jharukhas.

Gandhiji was born at Porbandar in 1869 AD. It is a small town  that is linked with India’s history through its association with Mahatma Gandhi. Porbandar was the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi whose father was the Diwan of the ruling family. The Kirti Mandir memorial built next to Mahatma Gandhi’s birth place lies in the old walled township of Porbandar between the gates and the Manek Chowk. The memorial of  Gandhiji, contains a Gandhian library, his personal effects, a photo-exhibition on his life and times, a hall for spinning cotton thread and a prayer hall. The Chowpatty of Porbandar is a popular place for strolls. The royal family of Porbandar built palaces by the sea. The Uparkot fort has existed at this site from more than two  millennia though most of its walls and monuments are relatively more recent.
